Humantay Lagoon
Humantay Lagoon is considered the third most popular tourist attraction in Cusco, right after Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, and it has quickly become a favorite among travelers seeking both adventure and natural beauty. Located at more than 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) above sea level, this turquoise lagoon lies at the foot of the majestic Salkantay mountain, one of the highest peaks in the region. Its waters are formed by the melting snow of the glacier, and the minerals present in the surrounding terrain give the lagoon its distinctive and dazzling color. Because of the altitude, vegetation and aquatic life are scarce, which enhances the pristine and untouched atmosphere of the place. The hike to reach Humantay Lagoon usually begins in Soraypampa, taking about two hours along a scenic trail that offers panoramic views of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Once at the lagoon, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking landscape perfect for photography, relaxation, and connecting with nature. The site also holds cultural significance, as local communities consider the lagoon and the Salkantay mountain sacred, often performing traditional offerings to honor the spirits of the Andes. For travelers in Cusco, visiting Humantay Lagoon is not only a physical adventure but also a chance to experience the natural and spiritual essence of the Peruvian highlands.
