Rainbow Mountain - full day
Also known as the Rainbow Mountain, this is a stunning natural attraction revealed only recently, when the melting glaciers uncovered the vibrant colors of these peaks. We invite you to experience this spectacular landscape firsthand.
This tour begins very early in the morning. We’ll drive south of Cusco to Pitumarca, where the adventure starts with a 5 km (3 mi.) hike. It’s a full all-inclusive tour.
We also offer the Palccoyo route, a great alternative with a shorter hike of just 1 km (0.6 mi.), perfect for those looking for a less strenuous option.
Classic Route – Vinincunca
Between 4:30 and 5:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive south of Cusco for about 2 hours and 45 minutes until we reach the community of Jarupa, where you’ll enjoy a traditional breakfast.
Just 15 minutes away lies Pitumarca (14,435 ft / 4400 m), the starting point of our hike, which lasts approximately 3 hours.
If you prefer, you may rent a horse (optional, not included).
At 16,404 ft / 5000 m, you’ll witness the breathtaking Rainbow Mountain, a natural wonder unlike any other.
We return along the same trail: after the hike, we’ll have lunch in the village before boarding the bus back to Cusco, arriving between 6:00 and 7:00 pm at Plaza Regocijo, just steps from the Plaza de Armas.
Alternative Route – Palccoyo
At Machu Picchu View, we also offer the Palccoyo route, a lighter and less demanding option.
The drive continues a bit further before taking the Palccoyo detour. From there, we walk only 30 minutes to reach a viewpoint overlooking the Rainbow Mountain and the fascinating Stone Forest.
This alternative allows you to enjoy spectacular landscapes from a different angle, perfect for those seeking a more relaxed experience.

What will you visit on this tour?

Rainbow Mountain
Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Winikunka, is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders of Peru. Located more than 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, between the districts of Cusipata and Pitumarca, it rises to over 16,500 feet above sea level as part of the Ausangate massif in the Vilcanota range of the Andes. Its fame comes from the vivid stripes of red, yellow, green, and purple that run across its slopes, a spectacle created by layers of minerals deposited over 65 million years. Iron oxide produces the red tones, chlorite and clay minerals give the green hues, sulfur compounds create yellows and golds, quartz sandstone forms the whites, and oxidized limonite and goethite add purples and browns. For centuries these layers were hidden beneath glaciers, but as the ice retreated in recent decades, the mountain revealed its colorful face to the world. Today, Rainbow Mountain is not only a geological marvel but also a cultural treasure, closely tied to the sacred Ausangate peak revered in Andean cosmology. Local communities have embraced tourism, offering guiding services, horse rentals, and traditional meals, while travelers from around the globe flock to witness this breathtaking landscape. The hike to Vinicunca is demanding due to the altitude, so acclimatization in Cusco is recommended, especially for those attempting the classic three-hour trek from Pitumarca. For visitors seeking a gentler experience, the Palccoyo route offers a shorter thirty-minute walk with equally stunning views of colorful mountains and the unique Stone Forest. Whether through the challenging ascent or the easier alternative, Rainbow Mountain offers a journey into the deep history of the Earth, a living canvas of minerals and time, and a profound connection to the grandeur of the Andes.
